I’m a prairie kid who loves research. I have a Master’s in economics with a focus on public programs, labour and education. Long before that, I did my undergrad in physics & English with a math minor.

Besides my resume, you’ll find this page full of sewing projects, the odd published poem, and stories about Canadian science.

A note about the blog title: in math and physics, the prefix eigen means one's own. It comes from the german, but mostly I always liked thinking about a particle's eigenvalues, and thought I might apply the same thought to my excursions.

Jeans mend

Jeans mend

Quick one; no before and no progress photos, as I left my phone in the kids’ room at bedtime when I started this, but I was pretty pleased with the outcome so wanted to include here.

Dad bought new jeans which tore along the back pocket almost immediately and I was recruited to mend them. To do so I partially un picked the pocket, and glue basted in a patch. I then used the latest zig zag my machine offers to baste in place (making pulling out those stitches all the easier - but I left in the wide zigs over on the upper right).

I darned with the feed dogs activated, just using the back stitch function to do big zigs and zags of straight stitching over the patch. First in a lighter blue grey, then in a darker. Went til I had to change the bobbin and called it a day. Then topstitched the pocket back in place, gave it a new bar tack and all done!
