I’m a prairie kid who loves research. I have a Master’s in economics with a focus on public programs, labour and education. Long before that, I did my undergrad in physics & English with a math minor.

Besides my resume, you’ll find this page full of sewing projects, the odd published poem, and stories about Canadian science.

A note about the blog title: in math and physics, the prefix eigen means one's own. It comes from the german, but mostly I always liked thinking about a particle's eigenvalues, and thought I might apply the same thought to my excursions.

Sweatpants!!

Sweatpants!!

Dance class has led me to the surprising to me place of making sweatpants. I haven’t owned any in like, my entire adult life? The last pair I owned I got in my early teens at a swim meet and they were red fleece and said swimmer on the butt and the style was to roll down the waistband so your legs would peek out at the hip under your swimsuit.

These are a 90s pattern, Butterick 3081, in a rayon-cotton fleece jersey from Fabcycle. Super soft and flowy, which is very comfortable and gives great movement when dancing, which is great, because it’s obviously not the jazziest colour!

The thin flexiness of the fabric does mean that the pockets show through annoyingly, I would have to think about how to do pockets were I to do these again. The pockets themselves are sweet with piecing from kid makes past.

I needed a bit of colour contrast to make these feel kind of cool, and there’s a sweatshirt to go with that has grey and maroon fleece, so i took some maroon twill tape, also from Fabcycle and a pretty great match for the sweat material, and created the angled lines you see on the one leg. I like the asymmetry and it was relatively easy to do (woulda been easier if I had decided to do it earlier in the flat tho)

Oh also they’re pretty high waisted, which is great for me.

Pattern: Butterick 3081
Fabric: Bamboo rayon cotton fleece jersey “Elk Antler” from Fabcycle & twil tape embelishment also from Fabcycle. Pocket lining made from lightweight knit scraps from kid projects
Size made: Medium (12-14)
My measurements: 30 waist, 39 hip
Worn With: Rad Patterns Lucky Lingerie bra
Next time: consider pockets (show thru and bunching) a little more
